Nelson Cruz Donates a Fire Truck to His Hometown
Many athletes when they strike it rich splurge on outrageously expensive sports cars but Texas Rangers oft-injured slugging outfielder Nelson Cruz got a bit more exotic in his choice of ride: a fire truck.
Don't expect Cruz to show up to spring training in his new rig ala Roy Halladay this past winter though, Cruz actually purchased the machine for his hometown of San Francisco de Macoris in the Dominican Republic.
"In my hometown we don't have ambulances or firetrucks, so I decided to buy one," Cruz said. "It was yellow, so we had to paint it red."
"It was definitely something to help the community there," he said. "I've heard that people who have an accident or have something happen have to go to another town. The hospital in my hometown isn't very big, so they have to go an hour away to get to the hospital. Some people die sometimes because they don't have transportation."
