Fans in attendance at the Missouri Grand Prix swimming event over the weekend got a special treat following the men's 100-meter backstroke event. Two-time Olympic gold medal winner Matt Grevers' heart was racing as he needed to find himself atop the podium for his plan to work. He did just that.
Enlisting his brother, a swimming coach at the University of Missouri who was hosting the meet, the Grevers arranged for Matt's girlfriend, fellow swimmer Annie Chandler, to award the medals to the victors. After presenting her boyfriend with his gold he had something for her, an engagement ring.
Chandler was shocked, to say the least, as this video and still show all too well.
Initially Grevers was hoping to propose to Annie with her atop the podium but she finished fifth in her event and so he had to go with Plan B.
"I've just been searching for a unique way to pop the question," Grevers told reporters. "My whole family is here and I figured it would be a perfect opportunity and a unique situation."
