British Teen Thugs Riot Over TENNIS?
Most Americans don't ever watch tennis, you know, because it's boring, but over in the UK they have much less entertaining sports options and take their tennis seriously, even when in prison. On June 29th, the Cookham Wood Young Offenders Institute in Kent, England experienced an uprising and hostage-incident (not pictured) when the inmates were told they wouldn't be able to watch the quarter-final match between Vera Zvonareva and Kim Clijsters at Wimbledon.
The inmates reportedly went "mad" and induced another inmate to pose as a "hostage" in an effort to get the wardens to turn the TVs back on. The prisoners paraded their hostage, with his arms tied behind his back and his legs tied together, in front of the prison guards yelling "We want TV, we want TV!" Sounds like someone has been listening to some Dire Straits...
When that didn't work they started breaking shit.
Ultimately the riot took over 5-hours to quell with 32 inmates causing over $16,000 in damage and 3 prisoners were arrested and charged with violent disorder. A number of windows were smashed up, pieces of concrete were torn off the wall and thrown at the guards and the prisoners even took apart a set of indoor goalposts and threw them at the workers.
All this for TENNIS. And it wasn't even the FINALS! Or hot chicks! Listen up British teenage miscreants, riots are fun, but doing them because you want to watch a quarter-final WIMBLEDON match just makes you all look like giant pansies. Grow a pair and riot for a GOOD reason next time, or stay in your cell like a good little boy.
