DC to Start Drinking Early for World Cup
With the World Cup now only 9(!!!!!) days away, fans worldwide are making their final preparations for watching their favorite teams vie for the most expensive trophy in sports. In Washington DC, the city's council are doing their part to ensure that the most popular sport can be enjoyed in the proper manner: drunk.
On Monday the DC Council approved an emergency piece of legislation allowing bars to open as early as 7am for the month-long tournament. Finally! I can't believe DC residents have had to wait this long for some good ol' fashioned honest American early-morning drinking.
When I first moved to NYC the fish market was 3 blocks from my house and one of the best things ever was going to get a beer at 6 or 7am with all the dock-workers coming off their shift as I was making my way HOME from a long, fun evening. Now, DC residents can do the same -- if only for a month.
Normally, DC bars aren't allowed to sell alcohol before 8am Monday through Saturday, and 10am on Sundays, thankfully, soccer fans will now have that extra hour to get themselves properly soused.
So, if you have some spare time, and an overwhelming need to get wasted before the sun reaches its zenith, it looks like for the next month that DC is the place for you!
