The Most Expensive Trophy in the World
With the World Cup rapidly approaching, the final preparations are being made to enable the event to be the showcase for soccer that ii is supposed to be. To that end, the famed FIFA World Cup Trophy is making it's way around the world before alighting in South Africa. That in and of itself isn't that remarkable, but what shocked me was the value of the trophy.
I know soccer is popular worldwide, but I was SHOCKED to find out that the World Cup trophy, which is solid 11 pounds of 18k gold, is worth a robust $20 million.
$20 MILLION! WOW!
No wonder people want to win the Cup so badly.
Of course, the winning nation doesn't get to keep the trophy permanently, but with the way gold prices keep going up the players would be smart to just chip off a little bit of it and put it in their pockets. The winning nation instead receives a replica of the trophy that is merely gold-plated rather than solid.
Because of its value, the trophy travels with an entourage of 20 security guards. Not bad!
